Public Safety Broadband: How Did We Get Here, and Where Are We Going?

Donny Jackson  (Editor, IWCE's Urgent Communications)
Harlin McEwen  (Honorary President, International Association of Chiefs of Police)
TJ Kennedy  (CEO, GeoComm)
Tracy Mac McElvaney  (Independent, Consultant)
Location: W218
Date: Monday, March 16
Time: 3:10 pm - 4:10 pm
Track: First Responders
Topics: Broadband, LMR & PTT, Regulation & Standards, Satellite
Format: Panel Session
Vault Recording: TBD

This panel session examines how the public safety-broadband initiative started (for example, with SafeNet in South Korea, ESN in the UK, and FirstNet in the US), how it has evolved, and how those experiences are informing the approaches being taken today on various continents. Hear from some original proponents of FirstNet in the US, as well as status updates from around the globe.

Takeaway

We will examine these characteristics in different approaches:
1. Broadband as a complement to LMR vs. a replacement to LMR (impact of satellite direct-to-device)
2. Commercial carriers' role in public-safety broadband and company implications
3. Government providing funding vs. spectrum--or both
4. Adherance to standards, particularly MCPTT
5. Comparison of U.S. model vs. multi-carrier models in Europe and New Zealand
