NG911: How Do We Make the Nationwide Vision a Reality?
Thousands of 911 centers have made substantial investments to make the technological transition from decades-old legacy technology to IP-based next-generation 911 (NG911). There is some debate whether any 911 centers are fully NG911, but there is little debate that considerably more work needs to be done to deploy the next-generation technology in all public-safety answering points (PSAPs) throughout the U.S.
What are the best ways to get this done? In this session, we’ll explore how NG911 is being deployed today, as well as future plans in various jurisdictions. We’ll also debate whether Congress is interested in helping fund NG911, particularly in more rural locations.
Takeaway
Some of the questions we will discuss: Can multi-vendor deployments—a longtime promise of NG911 for many—be implemented practically? Are there still technological struggles associated with NG911, or is this primarily an issue of resources, both human and financial? Is long-awaited federal funding needed, or can this be funded solely at the state and local levels?
