As wireless broadband networks are emerging as an essential form of emergency communications, physical barriers and lack of infrastructure in remote areas and in areas in which existing infrastructure has been compromised, challenges exist in connecting with both public safety responders and the public. The recent emergence of satellite-based direct to device and standards based device to device technologies can provide essential “last mile” communications that has the capability to fill the critical gap in the broadband-based environment.
