To Encrypt or Not To Encrypt Your Radio Comms

Brian Bittner  (Director of Emergency Management, Penn State University)
George J. Balasko  (Facility Manager, Radio System Administrator & Auxiliary Police Commander, Parma (OH) Police Department)
Clayton Northgraves  (Director of Statewide Emergency Telecommunications, SWIC, State of Connecticut)
Track: LMR & Broadband Devices
Format: Panel Session
Vault Recording: TBD

Radio scanners have become so ubiquitous, the public often learns about an incident before public safety can even react, which can cause operational security problems. On the flip side, if you encrypt, you may not be as interoperable with other agencies' systems, which can cause communications barriers during an incident. While other communications devices have encryption or security, radios have unique considerations, especially when multiple systems or manufacturers are used. In this panel, discuss encryption across talk groups and the pros and cons of radios comms being private again.

Takeaway

Hear how encryption can keep the public from knowing about an incident before public safety.
Debate whether it will keep agencies separate, hampering interoperability.
Discuss if encryption is even a viable option across your agencies.
