Strategies and Technologies for Resilient and Ubiquitous Communications

J. Gordon Beattie, Jr.  (Sr. Principal Research Scientist/RF & Wireless Architecture, CTO Office, VIAVI Solutions)
Wayne Wong  (Director of Radio Test, VIAVI Solutions)
Chad Knudson  (Managing Member, Access Marketing)
Location: W214
Date: Tuesday, March 17
Time: 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm
Track: First Responders
Topics: AI, Broadband, Cybersecurity, Drones and Robotics, In-building connectivity, IoT, LMR & PTT, Network Infrastructure, Regulation & Standards, Satellite, Situational Awareness, Threat Detection
Format: Panel Session
Vault Recording: TBD

In this panel, start with seeing a graphical comparison of what land mobile radio (LMR) does in comparison to cellular radio in the real-world Mission-Critical Push-To-Talk (MCPTT). A simplified but clear comparison of their signals, their coverage, and resulting functional capabilities and fault modes will be discussed, as well as how each operate in normal times and in times of interruptions in the infrastructure.

Next, explore how broadband and narrowband interoperability between "radio" and cellular can be achieved in both the network and the field and the limitations of each approach while maintaining cybersecurity, threat detection and situational awareness capabilities. Understand how newer technologies are designed to improve in-building and outdoor connectivity, how to assure mandated performance objectives and what pitfalls one must avoid when introducing a new technology or when entering a new type of operational environment.

Review practical considerations related to the introduction of some specific types of technologies including the integration of tactical mesh networks, improved geolocation, remote AI-enhanced IoT sensors in fixed positions, on remotely piloted or autonomous drones and robots, and in satellite-based Non-Terrestrial Networks. Also review regulations and standards when considering a mixture of proven and newer technology offerings, while receiving guidance on how to assess their applicability and suitability for your organization's operations. Finally examine options that may be available in later phases of 5G/6G and other network technologies in the coming years.

Takeaway

This session will be a lively tutorial and open Q&A forum to help both management and field operations personnel understand the practical aspects of various existing and emerging communications and sensing technologies operated across diverse environments now and in the future.

Modern communications systems have a staggering number of elements that all must operate well together under a variety of conditions.

The benefits and challenges of evolving LMR and cellular interoperability and enhancing technologies that keep first responders and the public safe will be sorted out and made clear.

Present and future technologies will extend coverage, safety and security across land, sea, air and space by leveraging AI and the integration of communications, sensing and geolocation indoors and in the field.

This session will provide some essential practical knowledge of how to select, integrate, test, coordinate, operate and ensure effective operations across a complex network of land mobile radio and 5G Advanced/6G cellular communications systems supported by ethernet, fiber, microwave, mesh, IoT and AI components.
