From Closed to Cloud - What to Ask Your Vendors

Ramya Doraisamy  (Managing Consultant, Altairis Technology Partners, LLC)
Topic: Network Infrastructure
Format: Power Session
Vault Recording: TBD

Radio systems are no longer closed networks. Modern LMR backhaul increasingly carries traffic beyond just LMR (video, etc.), and vendors are increasingly offering critical functions - or entire parts of the system - as "cloud-based." These hosted services can rely on processing and storage located anywhere, raising issues of control, cybersecurity, and reliability, and each introduces new points of exposure that didn't exist in traditional closed designs.

These modern designs bring benefits but also add complexity and risk to how a system is designed, deployed, operated, and managed. Understanding both is critical for anyone procuring, operating, or upgrading an LMR system. Security is not a checkbox (it's a set of questions the customer must know how to ask and evaluate). This session will equip public safety communications professionals to assess cybersecurity offerings critically, rather than accepting assurances at face value.

Takeaway

1. Understand shared backhaul and its impact on system exposure
2. Understand hosted and cloud-based LMR architectures and their new points of exposure
3. Learn the questions to ask when assessing a cybersecurity offering for an LMR system
