Can You Hear Me Now? AI and Emerging Tech for Public Safety Communications
A range of developing technology solutions promises to revolutionize emergency communications The commercial release of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) products since 2022 has led to extensive thought and controversy over public safety use. Gen AI promises significant enhancements in efficiency and effectiveness. This is critical in a public safety environment where tools become increasingly digitized, and the data collected in even routine arrests becomes formidable. Emerging software solutions that integrate a range of communication and sensor technologies, add further challenge, opportunity, and complexity.
A case study format will be employed to agency uses of GenAI solutions and other emerging communications platforms. Hear about both successful and controversial GenAI solutions for translation, transcription, sensor analysis, and call prioritization. Evaluation of these case studies will occur through an interdisciplinary governance lens, including legal, ethical, operational, and policy considerations. Discussion will focus on lessons transferable to resource-constrained agencies.
Conclusions will be presented from case study analysis, highlighting the successes and challenges of agencies in applying GenAI and other emerging technologies. The panel will offer both academic and practitioner perspectives, including applied research and hands-on operational experience with GenAI and other emerging technologies. The panel will also present a discussion of governance controls and risk mitigation strategies.
Takeaway
1. Hear how agencies have successfully used or gained efficiencies with GenAI solutions and other emerging technologies
2. Identify common uses of GenAI and emerging technology solutions for public safety communications (including methods to address GenAI challenges).
3. Understand GenAI and emerging technology trends and how public safety agencies can evaluate those technologies and develop and enforce sound AI use policies
