Budgets and CapEx and OpEx - Does Everyone Really Need a $5,000 Radio?

Land Mobile Radio (LMR) was once a capital expense every few decades or so. With subscriber radios and cell phones, that budget item moves into an operating expense. Everything has changed.... While some still have private networks, others public safety professionals now primarily use cell phones. And many have radios that are multiband, including access to LMR, cellular, WiFi, broadband, and even GPS and satellite. Does everyone need a fully-loaded multiband radio with all the newest features? Can some secondary responders - like public works, for example - utilize less expensive versions? Can your team get away with just using cell service or is it not secure or reliable enough? Do you want to spend with a service provider who may not even exist in 5 years? In this session, examine which options make the most sense for your organization.

Takeaway

Some departments may not want the expensive version, if they have to pay for it if they break it!
Features may be overload and not necessary for all groups.
Subscriber service doesn't always work for everyone.
