Whether they are delivering electricity, water or gas, utility grids are among the most critical systems in society. Driven in part by renewable energy sources and the need for distributed solutions, electric utilities are turning to broadband—be it on 900 MHz, CBRS or other spectrum—to deliver smart-grid solutions. In addition, fire hazards that created the need for blackouts have created a sense of urgency for preventative-safety solutions that demand low-latency connectivity. Meanwhile, incidents in the Ukraine and Oldsmar, Fla., have underscored the need for an effective cybersecurity strategy to protect utilities. Panelists will examine broadband options, transition plans and how deployments can be impacted by the fact that utility business models differ significantly from other industry sectors.
