Join the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) School Safety Task Force for a panel focused on the role of crisis communications and safety planning between school administrators, local law enforcement, and the school community in addressing threats of violence. This panel will include representation from both the school administrator and law enforcement communities to provide multiple prospectives on how effective collaboration plays a key part in keeping K-12 school communities safe when managing threat emergencies.

This panel will discuss the types of messages and channels school personnel and law enforcement can employ when responding to and recovering from threats of violence. Presenters will also discuss the importance of considering emergency communications protocols through the school community's broader physical security and emergency planning processes.

A partnership structure with local law enforcement with knowledge of the local school community is a key aspect of being prepared to face threats, as is knowing how and when to communicate as much information as possible with parents, school staff and other community members without breaching confidentiality or impeding an ongoing threat investigation.

Participants will come away with an understanding of how communication between school administrators, law enforcement, and the school community can greatly impact a school’s ability to respond to threats of violence. Additionally, panelists will highlight a recent school safety resource designed to help schools, local law enforcement, and community partners create tailored approaches to addressing anonymous threats.

Takeaway

a. The steps that school leaders can take to respond to threats in a balanced way and better prepare themselves to prevent and address future threats.
b. How and when to involve local law enforcement personnel in the process of addressing an anonymized threat.
c. How and when to communicate with parents, school staff and other community members without breaching confidentiality or impeding an ongoing threat investigation.
