For decades, the foundation of satellite communications has been geosynchronous (GEO) satellites orbiting the earth 22,000 miles away, the resulting physics of which resulted in higher costs, large terrestrial antennas, limited data throughput and unavoidable latencies. Today, a new breed of satellite providers regularly are launching hundreds of low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites into orbit 300-500 miles, letting them provide higher data speeds and lower latencies at affordable price points. Some are even promising broadband service directly to handheld smart devices in the near future.
