Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and cameras seemingly are everywhere, measuring and documenting the changing environment in a given geographic location, often making the information available in real time to individuals, enterprises and governments. While the potential amount of information from IoT sensors is mind-boggling, sorting through it all to find relevant points that can fuel Smart X initiatives—smart cities, smart grids, smart buildings, etc.—is a significant challenge that likely will require some forms of analytics and artificial intelligence to accomplish efficiently. Meanwhile, thorny questions continue to surface about IoT security, privacy concerns and the longstanding legal question: Who owns the data?
