Today's communications options are amazing. However, their infrastructures are vulnerable. What will still work after the worst case scenario happens? Compromised/damaged conventional LMR systems fall back to simplex line of sight. How do you communicate outside the impacted area? High Frequency (HF) radio provides this capability and is not affected by loss of conventional communications infrastructure needing only the ionosphere for infrastructure. And it can provide both local and long distance communications needs. This presentation will discuss how HF radio works and can provide the user with a resilient contingency communications system. We will discuss the advanced features available with modern HF radio systems that separate HF from the old voice only systems and ham radio that usually come to mind. These features include Automatic Link Establishment (ALE), digital voice, and digital data transmission. We will discuss how HF radio based systems can be built that can provide support for day-to-day operations and a fall back system in the event of a "really bad day" scenario. We will show how HF radio can be integrated with a business or government's normal operations communication systems to provide this fall back backhaul capabilities and near-seamless operations as experienced by the end user. Finally, we will discuss a roadmap for business or government entities to add HF radio to provide a resilient contingency communications system.
