Drones and Robots Serve as responders' new supplier and reconnaissance partner during emergencies

Date: Wednesday, September 29

Time: 12:00pm - 1:15pm

Track: Drones / Robotics

Format: 75-Minute Short Course

Vault Recording: TBD

Drones and robots have become important tools in the emergency-response toolkit, perhaps best exemplified during the firefighting efforts at the Notre Dame cathedral, where overhead drones provided much-needed situational awareness and robot was used to douse flames where humans could not go. Today, drones also are used for delivering LTE coverage when other options are not available, regular surveillance of hard-to-reach cell towers and other critical assets, providing day-to-day situational awareness to first responders, delivering medical supplies to victims until EMS can get to a scene, and taking “before” and “after” photos to speed disaster-recovery initiatives. But a level of public distrust regarding drones continues to exist, and the regulatory environment can be constraining in certain situations.
