Where network connectivity exists, LTE has proven to be a robust technology, supporting a host of voice, data and video applications. But LTE is inherently a network-centric standard that falls short when no network connection is available, and efforts to develop Proximity Services (ProSe)—the LTE standard for direct-mode communications—have fallen short of the requirements for the critical-communications industry.
But there is hope on the horizon, as technologies are hitting the market that provide alternatives to direct-mode communications when terrestrial broadband wireless network are unavailable. Attendees will learn how high-power user equipment (HPUE), a new generation of deployable solutions, ad-hoc mesh networking, direct-mode options and next-generation satellites services are providing multiple options to address the direct-mode issue and actually remove the need for direct-mode communications in many common scenarios.
