Public safety wants all of the information it can get when responding to an incident, and the number of potential sources for such key data have never been greater. But most agree that humans alone cannot accurately monitor all of these sources and prepare the most relevant information for the first responders in the field. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are seen as options to help address this challenge via automation, but some doubt whether these technologies are “ready for prime time” today. In addition, agencies should consider legal, operational and ethical questions around data rights, privacy and algorithm fairness prior to implementing AI.
