Those responsible for public safety network applications will be familiar with the NTIA First Responder Network Authority, one example of an interoperable public safety broadband network based on LTE. The success of such networks requires an active ecosystem of user equipment (UE) vendors to provide public safety entities the technology needed to deliver their mission. Network operators naturally require a layered approach to onboard a proposed public safety LTE UE device, starting with base carrier certification such as TRENDI (carrier IoT) and PTCRB (network interoperability). Following these basics, a rigorous security validation is then required for UE mobile gateway devices. This presentation will examine the general requirements for UE security to receive connection approval. The necessary platform design, algorithm choice, and device integrity will be addressed. Finally, an overview of the stringent independent testing regime will be given.
Public safety LTE user equipment should not be considered a black box, understanding the approval process will help understand important device security considerations.
